Captivating Beauty and Artistry: Exploring the Milwaukee Art Museum

In the year of the designer’s visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum (2018), the museum had only been established for three years, and the building itself was still very innovzative. It was an image of the museum’s expansive wings in the media that piqued the designer’s interest in visiting. Upon arrival, the museum’s centerpiece greeted us in the foyer – a vibrant red flame handcrafted from blown glass. Placed in a space that was primarily blue and white, it was eye-catching and complementary, immediately drawing visitors’ attention into the museum.

The design of the museum’s exterior perfectly complements its location, facing the expansive lakes of the Great Lakes region on the border of the United States and Canada. Despite being a lake so vast that you can’t see the opposite shore, the museum’s bow-like structure creates the sensation of being on a ship, ready to navigate the open waters. Looking upwards, the towering windows and soaring wingtips add a truly spectacular touch.

Walking through the lobby towards the side wings leads to the exhibition spaces. The layout is simple, symmetrical, and allows for a clear and straightforward flow of movement.

Attention to architectural details is meticulous, with carefully crafted combinations of angles and objects. Each curve is deliberately designed, and every line contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal.

The highlight here is undoubtedly the daily opening and closing of the wings. The museum opens at 10 a.m., and at 5 p.m., the wings slowly unfold, resembling a majestic bird spreading its wings, especially when viewed from the adjacent area. The museum’s commanding presence is further enhanced by the endless expanse of the lake.

The museum’s collection rivals that of larger urban art museums, and combined with special exhibitions, one day is simply not enough time for thorough exploration. One recent exhibition featured the works of two mischievous old souls known as g&g, and it was quite astonishing to witness their art, including the unexpected sight of two septuagenarians depicted in their nakedness. It goes to show the power of art! > < 1

Lastly, there is the outdoor space, which is another highlight. I truly hope to have a few days to come back here and enjoy a picnic on the grass.
