The Hidden Details of the “Sunward House Bed”: Stable Mountain-Shape Support

The most crucial aspect of a bed is stability, particularly for a structure like the “Sunward House Bed” which features a roof. During the design process, we focused on ensuring that the primary support of the entire bed would rest on these two “mountain-shaped bases.”

To enable these supports to take on such an important role, we chose spruce with a thickness of 6 centimeters as the main material. Some might wonder why we didn’t opt for the harder beech. The answer lies in weight. If beech were used at a 6-centimeter thickness, it would become overly cumbersome.

Conversely, what about using 4 centimeters of beech? This touches on our design priority: in this particular structure, “heft” and “larger joining surfaces” are more critical than mere hardness.

Since the mountain-shaped structure needs to withstand forces from various angles, we combined woodworking screws with water-based glue for fixation. Finally, we carefully filled the screw holes with wooden dowels, ensuring both stability and aesthetics.
