Unbeatable Lake View – Milwaukee Art Museum

When the designer visited in 2018, the museum was just three years old, and the building itself was still very modern. The interest in visiting was sparked by a photo of its wing-like structure in the media. Upon reaching the entrance, we were greeted by the museum’s treasure right at the foyer. A hand-blown glass creation in vivid red flame, set against a blue and white striped space, catches the eye and perfectly complements the environment, instantly drawing visitors’ thoughts into the museum as they step inside.

The theme of the museum’s exterior perfectly matches its location, facing the lake in the Great Lakes region at the U.S.-Canada border. Although a lake, it is vast enough that the opposite shore is not visible. The museum’s bow-like design leads visitors to an unobstructed view of the lake, making them feel as if they are on a ship, sailing through the waves! Looking up, the towering windows and the expansive wing tips are truly magnificent.

From the grand hall, visitors can proceed to the exhibition spaces on either side. The layout is simple and symmetrical, offering a clear and straightforward pathway.

The architectural details are meticulously crafted, with careful design in every corner and object pairing. The curves of the objects are intentionally created, with every line being a part of the beauty.

The most anticipated moment here is undoubtedly the daily opening and closing of the wings. At 10 AM, the museum opens with the wings unfolding, and at 5 PM, they close again. As the wings slowly rise, standing beside the museum, you truly feel as if a giant bird is spreading its wings in the sunlight against the endless lake view, exuding majesty and grandeur.

The museum’s collection rivals those in large cities, and with special exhibitions, a day is simply not enough to take it all in. The current special exhibition features the works of the duo G&G, two playful old artists. It was hard to imagine seeing two senior gentlemen depicted nude in their art, yet I found myself quietly admiring the impact of their work—truly art! > < It seems the building’s magic enhances the experience.

There’s also an important outdoor space, and I truly wish to spend a few days here to enjoy a picnic on the lawn. 🌿
