The “Sunward House Bed” relies on mountain-shaped supports on both sides as its main structure, and the key element connecting everything is the crossbar spanning the sides. The designer chose high-hardness beech wood for this purpose.
This setup involves several considerations: the thickness of 2.5cm is aimed at preventing deformation of the solid wood as much as possible, while the width of 15cm not only seeks the visual golden ratio but also minimizes deformation.
The clever aspect is the designer’s addition of “vertical crossbars” within the main crossbar. These not only further reinforce the structure to prevent deformation but also help the main crossbar support the entire weight of the bed slats, mattress, and railing.
Design is fascinating in this way. What appears to be a reasonable outcome is actually the crystallization of several different initial requirements coming together.
